Tajweed is the set of rules governing correct Qur'anic recitation: where each letter is articulated, how long vowels are held (madd), nasalisation (ghunnah), qalqalah, and the rules of noon saakin and meem saakin. It refines a recitation the student can already read.
How we teach Tajweed
Most students arrive able to read but never formally taught why they read the way they do. Tajweed turns that into knowledge — rules named, understood, and applied deliberately rather than by imitation.
The course is theory and application in the same lesson. A rule is explained, then found in the page in front of the student, then read aloud and corrected until it is automatic. Learning that idghaam exists is not the same as hearing yourself apply it.
This is the course where a one-to-one format matters most, because Tajweed is assessed entirely by ear. A tutor cannot correct a ghunnah she cannot hear clearly, and in a group she is hearing eight people at once.

Common questions about Tajweed
- Do I need to read Arabic fluently before starting Tajweed?
- You need to be able to read the Qur'an, even slowly. Tajweed refines existing reading rather than teaching it — a student still decoding letters should be in Qaida or Nazra first.
- Can adults take this course?
- Yes, and many do. Adult women study Tajweed in our Adult Sisters' track, one-to-one with a female tutor, which for most is far more comfortable than a group class.
- How long does a Tajweed course take?
- The rules themselves can be covered in six to nine months at two classes a week. Applying them without thinking takes longer, and that is what the later classes are for.
- Will I get an ijazah at the end?
- No. An ijazah is a certified chain of transmission awarded after reciting the entire Qur'an to a qualified teacher, and it is a separate undertaking from this course. This course teaches and applies the rules.
