This course teaches Classical Arabic — the grammar (nahw), word forms (sarf) and the vocabulary that recurs most often in the Qur'an — so that a student understands what they are reciting rather than only pronouncing it correctly.
How we teach Arabic Language
A student can complete Nazra, even Hifz, and still not know what a single ayah means. For many families that eventually becomes the thing they most want to change.
The course is built around the Qur'an rather than around a general Arabic syllabus. Vocabulary is drawn from the words that appear most frequently in the text, which is why comprehension arrives faster here than in a conventional Arabic course: a few hundred well-chosen words already cover a large share of the Qur'an.
Grammar is introduced only as it is needed to unlock a verse, not as a subject to be finished first.
What you'll be able to do
- Recognise the most frequently occurring Qur'anic vocabulary
- Understand the basics of nahw (syntax) and sarf (morphology)
- Identify verb forms, tenses and their subjects in an ayah
- Translate short passages of the Qur'an without help
- Follow the meaning of a familiar surah while reciting it
- Use a Qur'anic dictionary and word-by-word resources independently
Common questions about Arabic Language
- Is this the same as learning to speak Arabic?
- No. This is Classical Qur'anic Arabic, aimed at reading and understanding. It overlaps with Modern Standard Arabic but will not, on its own, make you conversational in an Arabic-speaking country.
- What age is this course suitable for?
- Around age eight and up, since it requires the abstraction to handle grammar. It is popular with adults, including parents studying alongside their children.
- Do I need to finish Nazra first?
- It helps a great deal, because you will be reading Arabic script throughout. Students who read slowly can still take it, but progress is faster once reading is fluent.
- How soon will I understand what I recite?
- Most students start recognising familiar words in short surahs within two to three months, and can follow the general meaning of a short surah within a year at two classes a week.
